Disney California Adventure, 25th Anniversary Year, 2026

Original Article and Photographs by Kenneth A. Larson © 2023 - 2025

We had visited Disney California Adventure shortly after it open in 2001 and again a week after our wedding in 2002. My sister and I took my brother's two kids in 2004 and my wife and I visited in 2018. This was a few months after the 25th Anniversary, although since it was also the end of the Disneyland 70th Anniversay Celebration, they didn't do anything special.

We arrived at parking at 8:00 AM. We used the restrooms behind the escalator, passed security, and got in line for the tram. We entered the park just after 9:00 AM.

We took photos as we leasurly walked along the trolley tracks to Cars Land / Radiator Springs and a few more photos on the way to Radiator Springs Racers. The street is lined with shops and other nods to the businesses that once lined Route 66.

We got in line and after about 15 minuses in line, the ride broke down, so we waited, hoping they would fix it. It was back up and running within a few minutes, but broke down several more times as we weaved back and forth through the queue . There are several open buildings, one with glass oil bottles through the wall emitting circles of colored light. Finally we were in our racer and strapped in. The ride stars slowly driving through desert scenery, then inside for scenes from the Cars movies. Then two cars line up on adjacent tracks, and the race begins. We won.

After almost two hours, we desperately needed a restroom. Unfortunately, we didn't realize that there was a closer one than the one we found. That accomplished, we returned to Cars Land and found Mater's Junkyard Jamboree. Fortunately, this wait was only about 30 minutes. We climbed into the trailer behind our tractor and started spinning. It's a fun sully ride in which the tractors switch between spinning disks and since the trailers are connected to the tractors by Springs, it is a spinning time.

By now it was 12:30 so we walked to the San Fransokyo Square area, which is mostly food. Another line at Cocina Cucamonga Grill with great Mexican food. We each got a Pollo Asado (Tacos).

I wanted to ride Incredicoaster at Pixar Pier. Pixar Pier was closed for renovation on our previse visit, this time, only Incredicoaster was closed. Later, we saw them testing the empty trains. My wife needed to rest, and the only thing around was Jessie's Critter Carousel, so I gave it a spin. I'm really not sure what rype of Critter I was riding.

We slowly started walking toward Grizzly Peak. Along the way, I road Golden Zepher, spinning silver rockets, while my wife rested. We then continued on our way.

Another restroom break before getting in the 60 minute queue for Grizzly River Run, while my wife rested. The queue winds through a Sierra Nevada type landscape. Expect to get wet on this ride as you drop and splash. I retrieved my wife and we walked to Hollywood Land.

We were looking for things to do while waiting for a 4:30 show and wandered into Disney Animation Turtle Talk with Crush, an animated show about sea life and turtles.

We had seen Five and Dime twice before, but now couldn't find it. There was a show starting in ten minutes, so we gave up, used the restroom, and got in line for Monsters Inc. Mike and Sulley to the Rescue. The wait was estimated for 60 minutes which placed it just in time for dinner. The queue went quicker and we were 15 minutes early for our reservation at Cartay Circle Lounge. We both ordered the fish of the day, seabass, which was quite good.

My wife was worn out and waited in the Hollywood Boulevard area while I did Radiator Springs Racers again, using the single rider line. On the way, walked through Avengers Campus. It looked exciting, but I'm not an Avengers fan and the Guardians of the Galaxy - Mission BREAKOUT is a new theme on the Hollywood Tower of Terror which was not a favorite of mine. The problem with the single ride line is that most of the people in line were groups. Defeats the idea of single rider. The wait was still estimated at 40 minutes, whereas the stand-by was 120. The Cars are 3 people wide, but a lot of couples leave an empty space to be filled with the single riders. It is much different after dark with colored lights washing over the rock work.

I found my wife waiting at the Disney Animation building and we slowly exited. We boarded the tram back to the parking structure at 8:30. It was a good day, but like most theme parks, we spent too much time in line. Everyone could buy a Fast Pass, but then that line would get longer too. The only attraction that I wanted to do and didn't, was the Incredicoaster which wasn't working all day. I did only six attractions, including one twice. I think we will get a park hopper ticket for the Disneyland 75th Anniversary Celebration, by which time several new rides are scheduled to open.
