Guachama Rancheria

Founded
by .
in Redlands.

Personal Observations

Today the Guachama Rancheria site consists of the ruins of a small administration building about 70 yards north of Mission Road and an archway beside the road. The site was originally a Guachamas Indian village. Villages, or "rancherias" were scattered throughout the area. In the language of the Guachama people, Guachama means a place where there is plenty to eat. Spanish exploration of the area began about 1772 and mission activities soon followed. Mission San Gabriel wished to increas its influence in the area that was to become San Bernardino. The mission system became active in the Loma Linda/Redlands area in 1810 when Father Francisco Dumetz entered the region to establish the Rancho San Bernardino as an outpost of the Mission San Gabriel. Guachama Rancheria was renamed San Bernardino on May 20, 1810 by Father Dumetz and it became the San Bernardino Rancho of the Mission San Gabriel in 1819. Some historical researchers believe that the location of the temporary chapel for the Rancho San Bernardino was in the immediate vicinity of the Guachama Rancheria where the present monument is located.

An enramada served as the chapel. A zanja, or irrigation ditch, was constructed to bring water from the mountains for irrigation. The first site was established very low in the area that had been regularly flooded by San Timoteo Creek. In 1830, the Mission was move about a mile east to higher ground at the present site of the San Bernardino Asistencia. With secularization in 1834, control by mission fathers ended.
