There are only two Spanish Mission sites open to the public in the present day United States State of Florida of what were once over one hundred. Nombre de Dios was the first Spanish Mission in what is now the United States, San Luis de Appalachee is the only restored mission in Florida. There are two Mission sites in Jackson County, see Spanish Heritage Trail. US Mission Trail hopes to visit Jackson County soon. Mission San Carlos 1680-1696 was a Franciscan Mission serving a village of Christian Chacato (Chatot) Indians. It was then the western most Spanish settlement in Florida. Creek raiders destroyed the Mission in 1696. The site is at West Bank Overlook off US 90 on the shore of Lake Seminole in Sneads, Florida Mission San Nicolas 1674-1675 was a Franciscan Mission and is believed to be near the site of the first Christian services in Jackson County. The mission was near the mouth of a large cave, but the exact location is not known. It was destroyed in a Chacato (Chatot) Rebellion in 1675. The location is near the intersection of State Highway 73 and Union Road, north of Cottondale, Florida. |
