San Miguel Mission Chapel

Founded 1610
by Tlaxcalan Indians
Santa Fe

Personal Observations

After visiting all of the Spanish Missions in California and half of the Spanish Missions in Arizona, Florida, Louisiana,, and Texas, this was my first New Mexico Mission. I spent the day in Old Santa Fe and saw several other historic churches, historic sites, and museums. It is a very short walk from the state capitol.

History

San Miguel Mission Chapel is believed to be the oldest, still active, church in United States, although other disagree. It was built in 1610 and rebuilt twice, mid 17th Century and in 1710 after Pueblo Revolt. It was built early in the 17th century by Tlaxcalan Indians of Mexico.

The first church was built about the same time that the pueblo of Santa Fe was founded in 1610. Built for the Tlaxcalans. the church was built before other buildings in the Mission. The first church was smaller and simmpler than those that replaced it. In 1640, due to conflicts, the Mission was partly or totally dismantled. The church was rebuilt but destroyed again in the Pueblo Revolt of 1680. It was rebuilt again in 1710. The bell tower was added in the 1830s. In 1881, the neglected ands detariorating building was sold to the Christian Brothers and restored. In 1955, the European styled additions made by he Brothers, were removed.

Five foot thick adobe walls support a roof of heavy wood tembers. The volume is about 24 feet wide, 70 feet long, and 25 feet high.

Of note is the wooden reredos, screen behind the altar, which includes a wooden statue of Saint Michael, which dates to at least 1709.
