San Francisco de los Tejas had been abandoned in 1693 and was re-established on the west bank of the Neches River at Bowles Creekin 1716 as Nuestro Padre San Francisco de los Tejas by the Domingo Ramón expedition. Fray Francisco Hidalgo and Fray Isidro Félix de Espinosa were placed in charge. The Misssion was abandoned in 1719 because of the French invasion from Louisiana.
In 1721, the mission was moved (by the Marqués de San Miguel de Aguayo) to the east bank of the river in what is now Cherokee County and renamed San Francisco de los Neches. It later moved to Austin.
