Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe

Founded 1756
by
New Braunfels, Texas

Personal Observations

It took me two tries to find this Mission site. The first attemp was late monring on Sunday and there was no parking. A few days later, on my way home, I stopped in the early morning. It was just after sunrise and took a while to find the marker off to one side and down a trail beside a stream.

History

Mission Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe was established in 1756, but was short lived. The church withdrew in March 1758.

The Mission was established beside the Guadalupe River and the site also was served by five springs. It was originally an Extension of Mission San Francisco Xavier de Horcasitas (1746-1755) which was located 100 miles northeast. That Mission had many troubles and itself was short lived. Mission San Francisco Xavier de Horcasitas moved to this location in 1755.

In January of 1757, the Mission population was two friars, a citizen guard, four Spanish families, and 41 indigenous people (27 were baptized). The site included fertile fields, timber, and meadows.
The Mission was abandoned due to raids by the Camanches and other Northern tribes.
