Personal ObservationsThere are three markers for Missions within a distance of a few miles. When I arrived at this marker, a large white dog came charging at me. I tried to look brave and prepared to be mauled to death. She (I think it was a she) jumped on me and tried to play. She mouthed my camera. She knocked off my glasses. She wanted so much to play. When I finished with my photographs and tried to leave, she started climbing into my car. Since I was several hotels stays from home and most didn't allow pets, I had to leave her behind. I had to wait until she got bored and moved away from the car, then jumped into my car and escaped. Looking in my mirror, she did look sad.

TEXT HERE Mission Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria was founded in 1749 by Franciscan Missionaries. The missionaries hoped to Christanize the Coco, Mayeye, Orcoquiza, Karankawa, and other tribes in the area. Following the martyrdom of Padre Jose Ganzabal and associated acts, the friarsand indians departed and the Mission was moved to the San Marcos River in 1755. The Mission was reestablished on the Sabinal River in 1762 for the conversion of the Lipan Apachies with the same name of Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria in Uvalde County. |
